Richard Thompson on Songwriting and the Guitar
In the October 2011 issue of Acoustic Guitar, Richard Thompson discusses the songwriting process:
Do you think of the guitar as a generator of songwriting ideas?
THOMPSON: Absolutely, yes, but it doesn’t have to be the only one. You can also generate ideas in your head away from an instrument, and it’s good to go to different instruments because on the guitar you might find yourself falling into predictable chord patterns or fingerings. Sometimes you sit down and play a G chord and then a C chord, and you’ve been there before. It’s important to break those habits somehow.
