GIG REVIEW: THE TELEGRAPH - SXSW 2013: day two, Austin, Texas
3/16/2013

Emmylou Harris, Richard Thompson and Yoni Wolf on day two of the SXSW festival.

Opening for Emmylou Harris was Richard Thompson, the veteran London master-guitarist, founder-member of Fairport Convention and OBE, who charmed an eager audience clinging to their coveted spots as a queue snaked around the block outside. Thompson's much-celebrated guitar playing is was rich it seemed impossible that there was only him, a bassist and a drummer onstage. He dropped in some British charm introducing "Salford Sunday" - "it’s not a very nice place... and this isn't a very nice song" - but struggled to disguise the mundanity of his lyrics, which are a thorn in the side of his songs. "My Enemy", from his new album Electric, was another case in point. "As I see your life fall apart," sang Thompson, "I should smile, but I don't have the heart".
