Richard Thompson destroys Savannah

The headliners may have been Americana music icons, and multiple Grammy-Award winners, Emmylou Harris and Rodney Crowell, but they spent most of the night trying to catch up to their opening act.

Thompson has always been an artist impossible to classify: An ironic dark poet's sensibility merged with a love of traditional European folk music, filtered through a master musician's understanding of jazz, blues and world music, 'Treadmill' is typical Thompson, with Scottish reel style electric guitar playing played like a jazz trio. He then proceeded to unleash a passionate 60-minute performance filled with tasty guitar picking, wry song lyrics and several blistering guitar solos - all done with Thompson's typical aplomb.

His no-nonsense set in Savannah was another brilliant performance. With nod to the namesake of the theater (Johnny Mercer, famous American songwriter) Thompson sang a few bars of Mercer's 1944 standard 'Accen-tu-ate the Positive' much to amusement of the crowd. The extended solo on 'Can't Win'mwas mesmerizing.
