'We had always been imitators,' says Richard Thompson. 'We were never going to play the blues as well as Muddy Waters or country as well as George Jones. So we thought, "what can we excel at?", and decided to go back into the music of the British Isles, bringing it into the lingua franca of the day, which was rock'n'roll.'
